What I Wish Every Future French Bulldog Owner Knew
Over the years, I've had conversations with hundreds of people who were thinking about bringing home a French Bulldog.
Some have been researching for months. Others have just fallen in love with a photo online and suddenly find themselves imagining life with a puppy. And honestly, I understand both. French Bulldogs have a way of capturing your heart almost immediately. But if there's one thing I've learned, it's that choosing a puppy is about much more than finding the cutest face. The Right Puppy Doesn't Always Look Like What You Expected Many families begin their search with a very specific vision. Maybe they're looking for a certain color. Maybe they want a male instead of a female. Maybe they've already picked out a name before they've even found their puppy. Then something funny happens. The puppy they end up bringing home is often not the one they originally thought they wanted. Instead, it's the puppy whose personality speaks to them. The one that makes them laugh. The one they can't stop thinking about. The one that simply feels right. I've seen it happen more times than I can count. Social Media Doesn't Tell The Whole Story
We live in a world where everyone sees beautiful puppy photos and short videos online. What those posts don't show is everyday life. They don't show the responsibility that comes with raising a puppy. They don't show the training, consistency, patience, and commitment that help a puppy grow into a well-adjusted adult dog. A French Bulldog can absolutely become your best friend, your shadow, and your favorite part of the day. But they also require time, attention, and a willingness to adapt your routine. The happiest owners are usually the ones who understand that from the beginning.
There Is No Such Thing As A Perfect Puppy This is something I wish more people understood. Just like people, every puppy is different. Some are bold and outgoing. Some are observant and thoughtful. Some are independent. Some want to be held every chance they get. None of those personalities are right or wrong. The goal isn't to find a perfect puppy. The goal is to find the puppy that fits your family, your lifestyle, and what you're looking for in a companion. Ask Questions Until You Feel Comfortable One of the biggest mistakes people make is being afraid to ask questions. Ask about health testing. Ask about temperament. Ask about feeding. Ask about training. Ask about what to expect when your puppy comes home. A responsible breeder should welcome those conversations. In fact, I think those conversations are some of the most important parts of the entire process. The more informed you are, the more confident you'll feel when it's finally time to bring your puppy home.
The Puppy Stage Goes By Faster Than You Think Everyone dreams about bringing home a puppy. What people don't always realize is how quickly that puppy grows up. The tiny puppy that follows you from room to room becomes the dog sleeping next to your chair while you work. The puppy that needed help learning routines becomes the dog who knows exactly where they belong. The puppy stage is short. The relationship that follows can last for many years. That's why it's worth taking the time to make thoughtful decisions from the beginning.
Choosing A French Bulldog Is Choosing A Companion At the end of the day, a French Bulldog is so much more than a color, a pedigree, or a photograph. They're the dog waiting for you at the door. The companion sitting beside you during life's ordinary moments. The reason you smile after a difficult day. When families reach out to us, my hope is never that they simply find a puppy. My hope is that they find the right companion—one who becomes a beloved part of their family for years to come. Because that's what truly matters.
